We see Lucas standing hilariously stone faced in the middle of the hallway, while everybody rushes past him in one of those fast time progression things. Lucas morphs into Peyton, than Nathan, Haley, etc. I get it! It's symbolic for how quickly time passes of something.
A friendly teacher who we haven't seen until now has an assignment for the students: he wants them to pair up and talk about stuff, in order to help them break out of stereotyping each other. At the end of the assignment, they will take a photo that will go in the yearbook. Yes, this is a filler episode! A lot of things here are plot points and foreshadowing for stuff later on, though. Haley wants to be a teacher. Chase a fighter pilot. Lucas has written the first draft of his novel.
Mouth is upset that Shelley thinks of him as a geek. To make up for this, Shelley reveals her origin story; she was in love with a guy at summer camp, and when she came back to school, the guy had a new girlfriend and treated Shelley like she was invisible. This led Shelley to create the "Clean Teens" group. I didn't say it was a good origin story!
Skillz gets a lot of dialogue for once, and he uses it to tug at the heartstrings! He fears that he will end up working at a factory like his father if he does not get a basketball scholarship. Haley interrupts his solioquy by her excitement over her kicking baby!
Brooke and Chase have hit a rough patch rather quickly: he has find out about her failing calculus and the stolen tests. Brooke expresses fear of rejection, not just by Chase but by her parents(they've been gone for months!) Chase being the cool dude that he is, tells Brooke she is good enough, dammit. She just has to stop lying. Brroke very confident that her clothing designer career will take off, and will have no interference at all from her bitchy mother..OOPS. Spoilers for next season.
Rachel is on the drugs! She spends some of her time with Bevin smoking reefer in the bathroom. It seems that Rachel is just as insecure as she was when she was fat. She changed on the outside but not on the inside! Since this whole thing is about telling secrets, Bevin admits that she would like to be a dude and strut around checking out chicks. That's a little odd. Bevin drops her dumb girl act and tells Rachel like she will be fine, while girls like Rachel and the other cheerleaders will spend the rest of their lives reliving their glory days.
Nathan and Peyton have absolutely no chemistry together and say nothing really that important. Maybe I'm just being hard on them, but i don't think so.
Lucas hangs out with a goth girl named Glenda. She has serious issues. She made up an imaginary boyfriend(and even had flowers sent to herself) and steals her mother's jewelry just to piss her off. But the healing powers of Squinty McHunkin' make her realize that hey, things aren't that bad. Lucas shows her the novel he wrote about his life. If that doesn't work out ,he'll come back to coach basketball at the school. He's got it all figured out.
And that's pretty much it. The gang takes their photos which range from lame to not bad. This episode does get bonus points for using "Baba O'Riley" from The Who over the final montage. Now get back to the good parts!
Yes, she's pretending to go to the bathroom like a dude. Try to wipe that from your memories. |
